Avi Cohen- A Tribute

Yesterday saw the sad passing of Avi Cohen, an Israeli footballer who spent some of his professional career at Rangers. He was involved in a motorbike accident last week but was pronounced brain dead yesterday. His son Tamir, who plays for Bolton Wanderers,  flew home to be with the family as they buried him in a funeral service attended by thousands.
Avraham or “Avi” as he was affectionately known was born in Cairo in 1956. Cohen started his carreer as a defender for Maccabi Tel Aviv. From there he moved to Liverpool in 1979 where he became the first ever Israeli to play in England. He struggled to make an impact at Liverpool and returned to Maccabi befor being brought to Rangers in 1987 by Grame Souness for one season, where he helped Rangers to a tense League Cup win in 1987  against Aberdeen where the Gers went on to win in a penalty shoot out after drawing 3-3 at full time. He also played for Rangers against Dinamo Kiev in 1987
Cohen is survived by his wife Dorit and 3 children.
Since his death tributes have been flooding in with Kenny Dalglish saying on the liverpool website:
“He was well liked by all the lads and although he didn’t spend a long time at the club, he certainly left his mark and no-one will forget how he helped us win the league against Aston Villa,”
Ally McCoist also left his own tribute on the Rangers website saying:
“I can still see his smile and his laugh, he was just a diamond of a guy. All our thoughts are currently with his family who must be absolutely devastated right now,”
DoTheBouncy would like to extend its sympathy for a sad loss to the family and friends of Avi.
